Might & Main

Intelligent Brandsmithery | Established 2010

Why the Name?

“With might and main” is an Old English phrase, originating in the late thirteenth century. It means “with all of one’s effort and strength; with all the vigor, force or energy at one's command.” At Might & Main, everything we do gets everything we’ve got.

Beginning with Thanksgiving and ending after the New Year, we are inundated with the commercials, customs, obligations, sights, smells, and sounds of the season. At Might & Main, some of us grow weary of all the fuss surrounding this time of year. But regardless of your traditions, the last month of the year does provide a natural end point—a moment to pause, reflect, and take stock of where you are, what you've done, and what you have. All of us are fortunate in one way or another, and at Might & Main we have many things to be grateful for, indeed.

Late Tuesday night, Maine became the first state in the nation to recognize same-sex marriage through popular vote. A majority vote recognizing the right of all citizens to marry regardless of gender and sexual orientation was momentous, especially coming as it did after years of gains and setbacks for equality in Maine.

Nerve-wracking, calming, infuriating, or unsettling, this is high season for political polling. When the figures get too much to bear, and our heads are swimming with conflicting numbers, we here at Might & Main HQ like to focus on the information design behind the polls.

This is the first of what we hope will become a regular feature here on the blog, embarrassment willing. It all began a few weeks ago when Sean started looking through some of his archives on an old, dusty hard drive. He queued up some of his earliest design—oddball art school projects, initial contract work, even flash videos!—for us to see, critique, and generally chuckle at. That got us talking about everyone's first endeavors in design, art, and being creative in general. We discovered that we each had our own examples of awkward and undeveloped work. Fortunately, now that we had enough distance from our naive and headstrong former selves, we could see these projects for what they truly were—stepping stones towards the creative people we are today.
